Swedish court confirms suspension of ruling on Gazprom

MOSCOW, Jun 28 (PRIME) -- A court in Sweden has retained in force suspension of a ruling by the Stockholm arbitration court in a gas transit case of Ukrainian state energy holding Naftogaz Ukrainy against Russian gas giant Gazprom, Gazprom said in a statement on Thursday.

“The circumstance strengthens Gazprom’s position to contest Naftogaz’s attempts to enforce the mentioned arbitrage decision in various countries. Gazprom will continue to defend its rights in line with the applicable legislation,” the statement read.

The Stockholm arbitration court ruled earlier in 2018 that Gazprom must pay Naftogaz U.S. $2.56 billion for non-shipment of gas.

Gazprom said earlier in June that a court of appeals suspended the ruling and that the company would use the decision as a ground to contest property seizure under the case in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko said in May that Ukraine had started to enforce the payment under the court’s ruling in Switzerland, the U.K., and the Netherlands.
